“How do I get in touch with kindness?”
Write a letter to Love using Liz Gilbert’s prompt:
DEAR LOVE,
…what would you have me know today?
Beloved, I know how tired you are. I know how it feels to be you from the inside. I know what a miracle it is that you are as happy as you are in your life today. I know what it took for you to get here. I know how hard you worked to get here. I know how much money it cost and how grueling it was. I know how many friends you lost and friends you walked away from. I know the family ties you severed, and the family hooks you had to rip out. I know the long, long dark nights of the soul wishing for a terminal illness to take you out quickly. I know that being seen is the wounded hunger within left from the years of neglect and disregard. I know your longing for attention is not a hunger for praise or adulation. You only want reassurance that you are existing in the same space as those around you.
Sweetness, I know the dark deeds of your past. I know the ones that you are not ashamed of, but that others would shame and hold against you. I know how the past can still haunt you and that is why I am here this morning and every morning. Your past does not haunt me. There are no moments of your past that cause me to cringe. I always see the heart of you – the beauty of you – the strength and determination and grit of you. I see the whole of this earthly and beautiful free will experiment. I see the heart in all of you and I see the heartbreak. You are as deserving of love as all of life is deserving of breath. You do not have to earn love or respect; it is your same birthright as oxygen. You are on the journey to that fundamental truth and I will help you get closer and closer every day. The same way I have helped you get to this place where you are truly – and for the first time—very very happy.
